Christmas is a time of joy and magic, loaded with gifts, sweets and family gatherings. Christmas lighting is present in all the streets of the city center and you may even suddenly hear a Christmas carol being sung.

Let us invite you, along with your family and friends, to join us at this very special time of the year.

There is a wide variety of things to do. You can stroll through the city center while looking for Christmas gifts. You’ll find the streets decorated for the holidays and beautifully illuminated.

If you don’t feel like walking, you can always get on the “Navibus” bus which will take you to Plaza Colón, Plaza Cibeles and Puerta de Alcalá as enjoy the special lighting.

Another interesting Christmastime activity is to visit the various nativity scenes around the city. Here’s a list of the most beautiful Nativity Scenes in Madrid:

There are many of Christmas markets set up in different squares. Among them, the one at Plaza Mayor is the most popular: 104 stalls where you can buy festive decorations, figurines or the traditional Christmas trees.

Talking about trees, at Puerta del Sol you will see the Madrid Christmas Tree, 35 meters high and made of gold metal.

Right on this square is where people (Madrilenians and visitors) gather to saying good-bye to the old year and welcome the new one according to the tradition of eating twelve grapes as the clock of the Madrid Regional Government Building chimes twelve times.
If you wish to avoid the New Year’s Eve crowds, you can attend the “pre – grapes”, a kind of rehearsal for the main event, which takes place the previous day (December 30th).

Eating “churros” with chocolate is something typical all year round. But during this cold period of Christmas, people queue up at the many chocolateries located in the historic city center in order to warm up and energize themselves with a hot cup of chocolate accompanied by a plate of “churros” (typical fried dough) or “porras” (big churros).
The most famous place is San Gines Chocolaterie located right behind San Gines church, in a quaint alley between Mayor and Arenal Streets.

At Plaza Colón, and also inside the Crystal Gallery of Palacio Cibeles (Townhall), there will be temporary ice rinks for skating.

A good way to end the Christmas season is to enjoy the Parade of the Three Wise Men which will starts at Nuevos Ministerios and ends at Cibeles Square.
